Interview with Deborah C. Peel, MD

Dr. Deborah Peel, the founder and chair of Patient Privacy Rights, gave an electrifying talk on why health privacy doesn’t really exist without true patient consent and why health IT will fail without privacy. During her talk, Dr. Peel spoke bluntly about the quiet destruction of HIPAA. Then, she eviscerated EHR vendors, pharmacy benefit managers, health plans, and others who brazenly share “de-identified” data that could easily be re-identified. She also outlined what physicians, lawmakers, patients, and healthcare leaders can do to put some teeth back into patient privacy. After her talk, Dr. Peel sat down with MDNG for an exclusive interview.
