Social Networking Goes Pre-Med

Yes it’s true, ANOTHER social network for medical students and doctors. New Media Medicine is a thriving community of over 40,000 doctors, medical students and pre-med students. With over 1 million page views per month, New Media Medicine is one of the largest medical communities on the net.

But wait! This one is different. How, you ask? For starters, New Media is set up for pre-med students, medical students and doctors. (Okay, so is Student Doctor Network). Here is the difference: when you go to the homepage, you see tabs for e-learning, forums, blogs, games, and videos. There are forums for each medical school, including international schools, basic science forums, career forums, forums for the various exams—it’s endless, really. The forums are not as busy as StudentDoctor.net.

Where New Media Medicine really shines is in the e-Learning, Medical news, and Evidence-based Medicine areas of the website. The evidenced-based medicine portion has articles, .PDF files, EBM tutorials, PowerPoint presentations, access to databases, journals, and medical calculators. There is also a section of clinical skills videos and links to more clinical skills resources.

Student Doctor Network should not be overlooked, however. It is still one of, if not the best resource for pre-med, pre-vet, pre-dental, and pre-psychology students out there. It is also a wonderful resource for medical students to learn about different rotations in various hospitals as well as different residency programs. There are forums for Podiatry and Optometry as well. They have all kinds of admission guides and help for navigating your way through the application and interview process. Last year around acceptance time, it was truly heartwarming to see this group of people who had gone through the application process together no only congratulate each other, but find out which of them would end up at the same school.

Student Doctor also offers podcasts, application advice from experts, and so much more. Student Doctor has also teamed up with Medpod101, a physician-run podcast site that offers medical students a new way to learn medicine on the go. Case-based podcasts can be downloaded for play on your iPod or computer.

These days, there is a social media site for every healthcare provider out there. So what’s stopping you? Get out there and network!

Nancy:Ellen you should definitely have them check the sites out for the information and for the friendship/advice from other students. Also there are posts from deans of medical schools that are quite helpful. It's worth some time over her summer vacation to really go though the old posts and to start to participate with the 'new crowd' that is starting to apply.     May 15, 2008 - 9:25:34 (CDT)

Nancy:I'm glad I was able to make it understandable. It's nice to see the friendships build on these sites. the wealth of teaching information is amazing. I wish I had all of this when I was in school!     May 8, 2008 - 6:26:17 (CDT)

Saralee:Dr. Tice writes yet another informative piece. She has become my expert adviser, though she doesn't know that! I also appreciate that her descriptions are written in such a manner that in addition to necessary medical terminology, we technically-impaired professionals benefit by her use of common English - a trait that I find rare (in my opinion), in our profession.     May 7, 2008 - 10:42:01 (CDT)

ellen:These look like great sites. I have one niece just graduating med school and starting her internal medicine residency in NYC and another niece who is pre-med and applying this coming year. I hope they listen to their 'old Aunt'!     May 6, 2008 - 8:40:29 (CDT)
